Nigerian Traditional Rulers
Traditional rulers in Nigeria frequently take their titles from those who ruled separate states or communities before to the foundation of modern Nigeria. Despite the fact that they do not have formal political power, they continue to command respect from their communities and wield enormous influence.
Though their carriers normally retain their sovereign predecessors’ monarchical styles and titles, their independent actions and relationships with Nigeria’s central and regional governments are more akin to those of old Europe’s high nobility than to those of genuine ruling monarchs.
Among these traditional rulers are; Emir use in the northern Muslim states, Oba use by Yoruba in southwest and Benin Kingdom’s paramount ruler in Edo State, Obi, Igwe and Eze are common titles among Igbo rulers etc.
